Well said! I especially love that last part. You may have issues with a book your child reads, but the responsibility is on your shoulders, not another's.

My parents never knew what I was reading. But, I'll say that I've never been moved to act on something written in a book. If a book talks about an affair, I don't think "hey! that sounds like a good idea" and then go do it.

I plan on censoring in my own home. What my kids read when they are out of my house is up to them. But, while they are in my house, there are certain rules not just limited to books.

Great post Danielle!

Ooohh, the ending sounds so frustrating. Still, the concept intrigues me, so I may have to pick it up anyway.

Another good post.

The thing that so many people don't realize is that the more you forbid something - especially to a child - the greater the temptation there is for them to search out those experiences. While no one wants there teen to go out and drink or have sex not talking about and avoiding the issue isn't going to prevent it from happening. But letting them read books, talking openly about issues lets kids know they can come to a trusted source when they have questions. They can then make better decisions when they have the facts & know the dangers instead of learning the hard way that unprotected sex could lead to pregnancy.

Wow what a great post. You always have such a great way with words Amy. Its so easy here in the US to take books for granted. The freedom that we have to choose what we want to read is dizzying at times. We should all embrace this and not try to censure books, thoughts or ideas. There is enough oppression already in the world without bringing it into our homes. So many don't have the choices we have and so it should be up to us to learn about those cultures. The more we know the more we can do to bring awareness and help make the world a better place.

There are two types of censorship, in my opinion. One is subject matter, which one can make a good case for based on the child's maturity. The other one is people trying to impose their beliefs and values on others.

When most people talk about censorship, they usually think about the latter. However, that seldom works either in books, movies or music - actually censoring something usually has the opposite affect the censor wanted.

Eric Cartman from South Park said it best: "They tricked us into reading a book by enticing us with promises of vulgarity".

Honestly, Ash's story was my least favorite. The best (to me) were Rashel, Keller, and Jez
