Heritage of the United States Quantity one: Colonial Time period – Whole Audio Guide – Charles Austin Beard was the most influential American historian of the early 20th century. He printed hundreds of monographs, textbooks and interpretive research in both of those heritage and political science. He graduated from DePauw College in 1898, wherever he met and finally married Mary Ritter Beard, a single of the founders of the 1st Greek-letter society for ladies, Kappa Alpha Theta. Several of his textbooks ended up published in collaboration with his wife, whose individual pursuits lay in feminism and the labor union movement (Woman as a Drive in Heritage, 1946).

In 1921, Charles and Mary Beard printed their Heritage of the United States. A contemporaneous assessment mentioned: “The authors… presume sufficient maturity in substantial faculty pupils to justify a topical instead than a chronological treatment method. They have dealt with movements, have sketched big backgrounds, have traced causes, and have discussed the interrelation of social and financial forces and politics. All this has been directed to the big purpose of encouraging the university student to realize American these days in all its national characteristics and as section of globe civilization as properly…The literary design is extremely clear and crisp, and the complete technique…is considered making. As a textbook or handbook for the ordinary citizen it ranks with very ideal.” (Summary by M.L. Cohen)
