Shatter Me Blog Tour – Q&A with Tahereh Mafi + Giveaway!
I cannot say enough good things about Shatter Me. The writing style made me giddy, the protagonist made my heart weep and I fell bad, so bad for the wrong boy. Warner, like Celine said, I will always love you.
Today, for Tahereh’s blog tour I have a Q&A that lets you get a little inside the author’s mind, and because she was so awesome at the recent NCIBA conference I have a signed hardcover for giveaway!
Where did the idea for Shatter Me come from?
It didn’t come from anywhere, actually. At least not initially. In this particular case, I really had no idea what the story was when I was first struck with an image of a girl sitting in a cold, dark corner. All I knew about her was that she was alone, too scared to speak, and that she’d been locked up for something she didn’t mean to do. I literally just opened a new document one day and tried to capture her voice in my head. She led the story and I learned things right along with her.
Are there any personality quirks in the novel that belong to you or a friend?
Ha! This is such a fun question. I can’t say for sure that *I* share any personality quirks with any of my characters, though I should point out that Juliette was an avid reader growing up, and I don’t think it’d surprise you to know that I was, too. (But I’m not sure if a love of reading is considered a quirk?) I can say, however, that Kenji – who you’ll learn so much more about in the 2nd book – is basically the amalgamation of my older brothers. Some of the things he says are lines I’ve stolen directly from the mouths of my brothers. He’s one of my favorite characters.
Which character is your favorite, and why?
My absolute favorite is definitely the central antagonist in the story, Warner. He is a crazy, complicated, deeply tortured character with a very complex backstory. He does so many terrible, terrible things, but he’s also keeping a lot of secrets about what he does and why he does it. There are so many layers to him; I love it when he shows up on page because I never have any idea what he’s going to do next.
How did you decide to use the strike-through in your text?
I didn’t. That’s just how Juliette’s voice came to me. I never made a conscious decision to write a book with stylistic flourishes; the strike-throughs were one of the only ways I could convey the chaos and self-censorship in Juliette’s mind. It felt natural to the way I needed to tell this story.
Twitter pitch Shatter me!
SHATTER ME is about a girl with a lethal touch & the government that wants to use her as a weapon in their war. Will she fight back?

I would be part of the resistence. Dictatorship is horrible and never makes sense. I know my views would be different and it would be hard to resist people and most likely get hurt but I couldn’t be a part of dictatorship its just wrong.

depends on if i’m the dictator of the dystopian world.if i’m not the leader than viva la resistance!!

The resistance, of course! Excited about this book for sure :)

It would all depend on how I was raised and my family’s circumstances. If I was only exposed to the “dictatorship,” I’d probably be a government cog. If I grew up within the “resistance,” I’d know how to be a freedom fighter.

I would be part of the resistance! Or at least, I’d LIKE to think I’d be part of it.

Resistance! Heck, #OccupyDystopian!

For a book that began with a girl sitting in a dark corner, Shatter Me is swimming in some awesome hype. I can’t wait to see where it goes on the release day!
By: Hafsah (@IceyBooks)
Oh, and I would definitely be a part of the resistance. Though I may pretend to be a part of the dictatorship :P
By: Amy Fournier (@amabe421)
I would definitely be part of the resistance! I read through chapter 22 when FB had the Shatter Day event and I can’t wait to read the rest of the book.

Resistance. All the way.
I <3 you, Warner!
By: April X (@ramen_addict)
I’d like to say resistance, but maybe part of the dictatorship to protect myself and people around me… I never really know what I would do in these situations
By: Danielle B! (@junecat14)
RESISTANCE!!!! I will not be controlled.
By: Onge (@ongeoakes)
I think I’d want to be part of the dictatorship at first so that I can get them from the inside!
By: Sophia
I would probably be part of the dictatorship, because I am a wimp.
