I can't believe this. It started with HOLD STILL, and now they want to ban 9 other books from that list. Where does it end? And why do they get to be the ones who choose what is best for the other kids? *sigh*

Thanks for posting this. I'm reading HOLD STILL asap. :)

I'd be interested to hear the daughter's version of the story. Why did she read through the entire book with the knowledge that this would potentially bother her parents? It sounds like there's more to this story than simply a set of parents being concerned about their child. And now it almost seems as though the parents are being exploited by the pastor's desire to "cleanse" the public school reading choices.

It always seems a bit crazy to me when parents go to this extreme anyway. I had a father who didn't approve of testing while I was in grade school. He didn't go to the school district and fight to have all testing discontinued for all children, that wasn't his problem. Instead he contacted my teachers and asked that I have the option of sitting them out because of personal beliefs. It was as simple as that and I never took a state test after that.

I'm sure if he would have met with resistance after that he would have sought other alternatives (ie. contact the school board on my behalf, or simply move me to a new school). With all the options we have today with schooling I just don't buy the whole idea that parents are "stuck" with a particular school's curriculum or choices. If you don't like what they do, find a different school or, heaven forbid...talk to your kids about what they're studying/reading. It's all just so ridiculous to me. Not to mention a huge waste because of those that would have benefited by having those books on the shelves while people learn to use their brains.
