Review: Fury by Elizabeth Miles and Giveaway
“Wholly believable and a fantastic update to fascinating lore.”
From Hicklebees: It’s winter break in Ascension, Maine. The snow is falling and everything looks pristine and peaceful. But not all is as it seems…
Between cozy traditions and parties with her friends, Emily loves the holidays. And this year’s even better–the guy she’s been into for months is finally noticing her. But Em knows if she starts things with him, there’s no turning back. Because his girlfriend is Em’s best friend.
On the other side of town, Chase is having problems of his own. The stress of his home life is starting to take its toll, and his social life is unraveling. But that’s nothing compared to what’s really haunting him. Chase has done something cruel…something the perfect guy he pretends to be would never do. And it’s only a matter of time before he’s exposed.
In Ascension, mistakes can be deadly. And three girls—three beautiful, mysterious girls—are here to choose who will pay.
I had a lot of feelings to sort out about this book. You see I read it epic fast, and I stayed up late reading it but I didn’t feel like I enjoyed it. I read it a few weeks back and I am happy I had this time in between reading to tour date post to sort through what it was that was putting me off. You see it was me, I was putting myself off this book with forcing my own ideas about things onto it. Once I realized that I was being this way it was super easy to move on, rethink what I read and to actually come out on the other end really enjoying this book and looking forward to a sequel.
Let me start by saying I love Greek Myth, more than anything really in lore. I love the way Miles took one of my favorite stories and updated it not to focus on the legend but to have them be a part of the story instead of the main protagonist. It was fabulous to have a human or in this case humans as the main character instead of the paranormal being. Because guess what, supernaturals usually are scary.
The pace was fantastic in the book and another thing I loved is the lore wasn’t just spelled out of you as you are reading. You pick up bits and pieces along the way and there is no crotchety old man to sit you down and explain everything there is about the Furies to you or to Emily. She has to work for it too.
The situations were believable and I think teens can really relate to the problem sets and the ‘bad’ things that the teens in the book are doing, the bad decisions they make and the good ones too.
I reviewed this book for Katie Davis’ Brain Burps podcast which is number 1 in children’s literature podcasting. Watch for that episode in the future.

I am going to finish reading this one myself today. Didn’t really hook me until towards the last third of the book and to find out what terrible thing Chase did and who the mystery girls are did it for me at the end. And yes I will read the rest of the trilogy.

I’ve been a HUGE slacker on my reviews. I’ve read a ton but have reviewed so little! Bad blogger/reviewer!
Thanks for the giveaway!

Forgot to say ‘Happy Mothers Day’ to my Mom once. Even if the actual Furies didn’t come after me, my Grandmother and Sister sure did!
I’m excited to read this regardless – as a girl who grew up in Maine, I always love when books take place up there! Or anywhere where I actually live really… makes imagining things so much more fun!

I would have made the furies mad by not cleaning the house today

The Furies would totally come after me from all those lies about enjoying being with my ex’s family at their house all of those holidays, then they might biatch slap me for still being nice to them even though they regularly harass me.
They also might come after me for ignoring all of those phone calls and messages I just procrastinate on too.
ack better watch out for red flowers on seats.

Let’s see…I didn’t buy my dad a birthday present. Yep, they’d probably get after me for that…
I’m really excited about this book. :)
