Regarding "It labels 100% of the hundreds of people who raise complaints as 'censors,' and this after complying with ALA material reconsideration policy guidelines," see http://safelibraries.blogspot.com/2010/09/parent-trap-ala-uses-banned-books-week.html

Regarding "It uses George Soros money to create a school curriculum for K-12 children on 'personal privacy,' which has nothing to do with librarianship and that teaches children to defy their parents," see 1) http://www.aasl.ala.org/aaslblog/?p=1412 and 2) http://youthprivacy.ala.org/2011/05/07/new-video-overview-of-youthprivacy-conference/ - where one "Cory Doctorow" talks about how children need to jail break devices and get around parental controls, etc.

Regarding "It forces, or attempts to, communities to do as it says in both public schools and public libraries despite community opposition," see 1) http://safelibraries.blogspot.com/2009/11/cert-denied-vamos-cuba-cuban-americans.html and 2) http://safelibraries.blogspot.com/2010/05/ala-double-standard-on-accuracy-in.html and 3) http://safelibraries.blogspot.com/2011/07/porn-and-sex-abuse-in-our-public.html

And all those sources contain the reliable sources needed for proof of the matters asserted.

I thank Bookalicious for this forum and Laurie Halse Anderson for asking for evidence for my statements instead of simply dismissing them out of hand, etc. Thank you, sincerely.

Laurie Halse Anderson has asked via Twitter that I provide links with sources for what I said about the ALA. Seeing now she is referring to my comment here, I thought it best to follow up with another comment here.

I'll assume I need not support "ALA advises parents to be responsible for their own kids" as it is obvious.

As to "misleads those parents when they follow the ALA for guidance," I had in mind a number of different means, including the presentation of awards. For example, in 2006, the ALA awarded <i>Looking For Alaska</i> as the best book of the year for children 12 and up. Yet the ALA did not disclose content such as oral sex. I personally got the book's author to admit he would not even give his own award winning book to his own 12 year old if he had one. So the reliable source here is John Green, among others. See http://safelibraries.org/pushers.htm

Regarding "plagiarizes admittedly sub-standard material to promote 'Banned Books Week,'” see http://safelibraries.blogspot.com/2010/12/how-ala-plagiarism-becomes-truth.html

Regarding "It falsifies the annual top 10 challenged book list by promoting material of political interest to the ALA, not the actual books that were actually most challenged, and I have a recording of a 'banned' author admitting the ALA told her this, in her own words," I have not yet published this, but Amy Sonnie was the author and the statement was made at a New Jersey Library Association meeting months back. I will publish the recording soon--I would have by now if I also had an "Office for Intellectual Freedom," but it's just me. I later spoke with Amy Sonnie for about half an hour and I was very impressed by a number of things, including her smarts and her caring attitude. She's really sharp.

Thanks for mentioning me! "Safe Libraries feels the ALA is too lax...."

Not exactly. It's more that the ALA advises parents to be responsible for their own kids, then misleads those parents when they follow the ALA for guidance.

In addition, the ALA is dishonest in what guidance it does provides. For example, it plagiarizes admittedly sub-standard material to promote "Banned Books Week." It falsifies the annual top 10 challenged book list by promoting material of political interest to the ALA, not the actual books that were actually most challenged, and I have a recording of a "banned" author admitting the ALA told her this, in her own words. It labels 100% of the hundreds of people who raise complaints as "censors," and this after complying with ALA material reconsideration policy guidelines. It uses George Soros money to create a school curriculum for K-12 children on "personal privacy," which has nothing to do with librarianship and that teaches children to defy their parents. It forces, or attempts to, communities to do as it says in both public schools and public libraries despite community opposition.

I could go on and on.

That goes beyond being "too lax." That is outright dishonest.

I realize there is a tendency to blame me for making such disclosures. But I am merely disclosing what's already there. I don't tell communities what to do--rather I advise them of the above disclosures and more then let the community make its own decisions, now more fully informed. If there is any fault, it lies with the ALA for doing those things, not with me for disclosing what the ALA is doing. I am not forcing the ALA to be dishonest.

Of course, I read Slaughterhouse 5 in high school. So that may explain things.

Hey, all you commenters? Why not follow me? @SafeLibraries See that I follow many authors, including, for example, Speak's author, with whom I tweet, and I frequently RT their contests, interesting comments, etc.

Not having read the more contemporary YA books, I can't comment and maybe they're totally hellish, horrific things that will lead our kids astray, oh my!

I just HAVE to say that...Slaughterhouse FIVE?!??! REALLY What in the blankity blank blank could they possibly think to remove this book for??? Sorry...I guess I'm like a total nut job, die hard Kurt fan but like, I read him in highschool and lead a totally, like, normal life, now. Sigh. I'm going to stop before I get myself more worked up. Sigh.

Gosh, I can't even coherently comment on the idea of censoring books for kids because I can't even get beyond them actually moving forward with taking out SH5. Really, I'm done, now.

I completely agree. I can't believe they actually did ban Twenty Boy Summer, which had me in tears and Slaughterhouse Five, which I haven't read yet. I'm very glad they did keep Speak.

Well said. It bothers me to no end that people feel the need to tell others what their kids can and can't read, and I am deeply dismayed that Scroggins successfully had two books removed.
