Review: Divergent by Veronica Roth
“Divergent fills the gaping hole left in the hearts of those who loved and miss The Girl on Fire.”
From Goodreads: In Beatrice Prior’s dystopian Chicago, society is divided into five factions, each dedicated to the cultivation of a particular virtue—Candor (the honest), Abnegation (the selfless), Dauntless (the brave), Amity (the peaceful), and Erudite (the intelligent). On an appointed day of every year, all sixteen-year-olds must select the faction to which they will devote the rest of their lives. For Beatrice, the decision is between staying with her family and being who she really is—she can’t have both. So she makes a choice that surprises everyone, including herself.
During the highly competitive initiation that follows, Beatrice renames herself Tris and struggles to determine who her friends really are—and where, exactly, a romance with a sometimes fascinating, sometimes infuriating boy fits into the life she’s chosen. But Tris also has a secret, one she’s kept hidden from everyone because she’s been warned it can mean death. And as she discovers a growing conflict that threatens to unravel her seemingly perfect society, she also learns that her secret might help her save those she loves . . . or it might destroy her.
Divergent is one of those books that grabs you by the shoulders, and holds you down and doesn’t let you go until the last page. Even then you will be hungry for more, the ending for this phenomenal debut leaves you panting in anticipation for book two.
I am just going to be straight up with you. This book has replaced the hole in my heart that was left when the Hunger Games Series came to an end, and Tris has far more of my allegiance than Katniss ever did after book one. Tris is smart, and scared of her situation. She feels things on a macro level and as the reader you get to experience so much through her eyes.
It’s really debatable which camp I wanted to bed down with for life, but I think at least in spirit we should all strive to be Dauntless . The Dauntless motto should ring true for all of us in this life. Be strong, be brave and do whatever you have to in order to survive!
I truly believe that Divergent is one of the best dystopic books I have ever read. It is high concept, it grabs you and rushes you through to the finish, the side characters are well fleshed out. The plot is tight, I cannot say enough good things about this book and I am extremely excited for it’s release in May.
Veronica Roth is an author to watch. Her style is informative but yet casual, simplistic in form while giving you the extreme amounts of meta data needed to fully enjoy the setting. The big reveals were fascinating and I saw none of them coming.
This book is important, I believe it is a genre-buster, and brings a refresh to a sub-genre that is getting over populated with the same old story and vibe. Tris is a hero rival to any dystopic lead. I genuinely believe you will fall in love with her and her plight.

Eeep! I want this so bad!! I’m so happy to see that you loved this one and you deem it as one of the best dystopians you’ve read! I keep getting scared with all these dystopians popping up and thinking that they are going to be subpar. YAY! Can’t wait for this one now!

WOOT! Fist pump big time to Divergent. I’m so glad you liked it and YES, it was fabulous. I can’t wait for the next one! For me, it’s not quite up to Hunger Games status yet, but I feel that will change in books to come <3

This book sounds amazing. I’ve heard people say it was but this is the first review I’ve read. I can’t wait to read. And if you say it’s a “genre-buster” then this must be something pretty great!
