I love that Sarwat is into writing awesome heroines for his daughters. I think that's gotta be one of the best legacies that he can leave for them, and a great way to help them grow up with good role models.

Greetings from the land Down Under, and congratulations on a professional and enjoyable site for openers.

What a marvelous role model, truly, marvelous. I am delighted to read about a man that has the chutzpa to write in this genre and do it well to boot. Young woman need to have strong images of our gender, fictional characters have an enormous input on the tween and teen market, that rings true today more than ever before.

This author is recommending through example that young people stand tall and proud without the need to lean on, OR rely on another person to do so..

Bravo.

Gotta love a dad who will go to such lengths to speak to his daughters with a message that will last...and it resonates with me as a mom too. It's precisely the reason I started writing YA, and I love how it not only brings me closer to their orbit--but their friends too. Huzzah!

Wonderful post! I am definitely on the Athene side of the river. Kick-butt girls for the win!
Also, that picture: endless LOLs

To answer your question, Pam: I honestly don't care about the gender of the writer, so long as they capture the voice of their character. If a dude can write well in the female voice, I say go for it! It's a bonus that Sarwat has daughters to inspire. :)

Fantastic post! It occurs to me that Cinderella and Athena are different genres of stories - folktale character vs. mythological goddess. I'd love to think more about the differences between the ways that folk/fairytales portray women (ie. often cautioning us to do or not do things: be passive, obedient, don't talk to wolves, er, strangers, etc.), and the ways that myths portray women - particularly goddesses (also in some ways as models for mortal women but also creating space for female strength and power?)

THAT PICTURE! AHAHAHAHAHAHH

I think there is a place for both types of girl in literature - though if they are of the Cinderella variety they had best learn something about themselves throughout the course of the book. Those can be my favorites - the ones that are a mix of both Cinderella and Athene, who transform and learn.

I do rather like how you describe both, and what you prefer to write, but then suggest we try all types! Very good advice. Loved your video interview with Pam also!
