This book can't be banned!
I've been in the hospital and seen teens suffering. I've seen the confusion, the marks, and I'd like the library to go down and look and those teens, to actually sit and listen to them and then see what they say. To take a book away that can help them. It's hard to face reality but that's something we MUST do, we can't just sit in the dark anymore because that is what makes everything worse.

Great post! I live minutes away from Boone County and I'm really saddened such a book would be challenge. I'm not surprised though - there's a variety of opinions lurking in Kentucky, and some of them are towards the negative side when it comes to LGBT. I just read the update on her site and found out it's still on the shelves so far, so that's good.

I'll be blogging about this shortly.

If you don't understand, or agree, with a book, just don't check it out. Nobody is forcing you to read it. But please, don't ruin it for the rest of us.

Now, because of this controversy, I want to go out and buy Scars and see what all the hubbub is about.

Boone County Public Library has not banned Ms. Rainfield’s book; in fact, it is still in our catalog and is currently checked out. A customer challenged the book. We simply contacted the author to find out more about her book. Currently we have four copies of the book, all checked out. Here’s the link to our catalog:

I have read this book but I support any cause to help a book from being banned; it's just wrong. I will definitely be emailing them.

I dont live in the South and I really dont understand why anyone would decide to ban something that can help so many? Dont they know that libraries are there so books can reach and comfort people.
Ugh this makes me so sad. Not everyone believes in the same thing, its 2011 people!! If they dont like the books message they can just keep their opinion to themselves and let others decide what they'll take from it.
I want to read Scars and i hope this gets sorted out fast so other teens can read it too.

By writing Scars, Cheryl Rainsfield has given a voice to kids who cut. By taking Scars off the shelves, Boone County Library silences them.

The issue is out there. The kids are hurting, their parents are struggling and no one wants to talk about it.

The scars, visible and invisible, need openness to heal. A little fresh air please!

By the way, love the headline.

As you know Pam, this is a subject near and dear to my heart.

Luckily, public libraries are protected as they are public institutions and therefore cannot limit access to information.

However, challenges are a constant issue they must deal with. If the Boone County librarians are walking in unfamiliar territory, they have the ALA who will back them up and even provide all that they need to deal with this issue.

Here is some information that librarians or others have access to for assitance when a book is challenged.

As long as people have opinions, right or wrong though they may be, the freedom of speech allows them to speak out.

It is infuriating though when this right is abused in a way that would take away this same right from others.

Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!!

Thank you Pam for your efforts in allowing your blog to be a platform to help make a positive difference in the lives of children and adults.
