Saving money at Book Expo America

I travel a lot. Like a lot, and I have learned some things that work in any state, any country, anywhere you want to travel. People tend to waste a lot of money on vacation due to lack of time, or lack of comfort navigating in the area they are in. There are several ways to save some serious cash while out and about.

  • Use the wifi at a coffee shop like Starbucks when you are done with your day instead of paying the mounting fees your hotel charges. If it’s $10 a day for five days you have saved yourself $50!
  • If your hotel has a breakfast bar, hit it and hit it hard. Take a piece of fruit with you for a mid-morning snack. If not stock up on some fruit and bagel from a market in the area. Saves you the cost of paying for breakfast.
  • Lunch on the street. You are on the go anyway so why pay more for lunch. Grab a dog and a soda from a street vendor and have a relaxing ten minutes in the sun before making your way to the next destination.
  • Carry a bottle of water with you and refill it at taps or fountains.
  • For dinner use Yelp to find places near you with good food on the cheap. If dining with a big group call ahead and ask if they have a group discount.

Some tips for staying safe:

  • Stay with a group of two or more.
  • Keep money in your front pocket.
  • If you carry a purse, hold onto it. Don’t pack anything in that purse that can’t be replaced. If you have a credit/debit card keep that in your front pocket.
  • If you see someone shady make eye contact. If they think you can identify them it cuts the chances they will rob you in half.

Aw, I wish I was going to BEA. :(

The hotels in Italy had these little packets of parmesan cheese that were great to put in your purse and take to snack on. I loved them! That might be the biggest thing I miss about Italy, actually… :P
