Has social media made us lazy?
We have all heard the term ‘social media douchebaggery’ and laughed, but are we we all guilty of a douchebaggery much more sinister in it’s origin? Are we becoming too lazy to comment on each others posts and read each others posts or even email each other thanks and praise because we can do all that much quicker in a public arena in 140 characters or less? I know I am guilty of this. What about you?

Well, I still comment on posts. :(

Guilty as charged. :o) *must do better*

I have been horrible, especially since the baby was born. Even with posting here, and updating my social networking profiles like Good Reads. I must do better also.

I think social media has actually caused me to take on more than I should. I love commenting on posts but it seems like every day I add a new blog to my reader and new people to follow in Twitter. I just can’t keep up so I guess I get lazy in leaving short comments or skipping comments all together.

I agree with Debbie.
I have overwhelmed myself with social media outlets: Several blogs, Twitter, and now Facebook.
It’s been just too much for me to hanlde. I basically shut down. All I did was try to keep up with my Google Reader.
At this point, I am willing to slowly wade back in, but am thinking that the serious curtailment of my activity on Twitter will remain. I just can’t keep up.
Yes, it is easier and quicker. But when you are following so many people, the individual gets lost in the cacaphony of tweets and I find that unless I have Tweetdeck up 24/7, I simply can’t keep up with what is going on with everyone.
Not only do I feel lost because I haven’t kept up on the convo streams, I feel bad because maybe there is something I should respond to, or congratulate someone on, and I missed it.
I could just unfollow a ton of people, but bascially everyone I follow is also on my Google Reader. The majority are the wonderful bloggers who I love following. But I love so many of them, I can’t comment on every single blog, or on every single tweet.
I’m very torn as to what to do. I will be following this thread in hopes that perhaps I can find a way to deal with this dilemma.
Great question Pam!

I don’t even get compliments on my reviews and interviews via Twitter or FB so you’re a step ahead but it would be nice if people took the time to write something on a site because it shows that the person actually was there
and reading and writing complement one another quite nicely.

I agree with Debbie, I think it is getting us all overextended, even if that overextension is just trying to keep up with our blogs, our blog reading, AND Twitter/wave/etc. I think it is more not having enough time to comment than just being lazy.

I still try to comment on all my favorite blogs, but it is very difficult!! I have been at 1000 posts to read in my Reader for over a month now!!! I am only on Twitter and have my blogs, but I also work full-time, have two kids, and a husband who works very long hours. For those who are keeping up, how do you do it? There has been times where the enjoyment is being seeped out of it all!!
